A spring container planting opens the new garden season. Long before the ground can be worked and the landscape is fully awake, cold tolerant seasonal plants in pots foretell the season to come. Many of the cold tolerant plants, such as alyssum, pansies, violas, heucheras, annual phlox, angelina and petunias, will persist into late June. There is no need for any pot to be empty, waiting for the soil and air temperatures to be warm enough for summer annuals. Fresh cut twigs can add drama and height to a planting.
