Wednesday Opinion:The First Day Of My Sixties

The first day of my sixties-not half bad.  At market at 6 am, Crystal from Julie’s Floral gave me a really great bottle of chardonnay-and a kiss.  Monica brought a slew of my favorite chocolate cupcakes covered in sprinkles from Ellen’s-have you ever tried them?  Rob redeemed himself somewhat with a fine pair of leather handled French pruners from Arno-they are a perfect size and heft for a gardener with small hands.  Both of the annual planting jobs I did today went well-I am down to my last 14 plantings.  People for whom I plant late get big material-as a greenhouse is the perfect place to grow annuals until the Michigan weather really warms up.  My pots at home are not done-but they will get done in the next week or so.  I plant later in June every year.  All in all, today was a credible debut.  Think of it-a debut.

Happy birthday! From reading this blog, I know that you are at the height of your creative powers, as are so many artists at age 60. Your best is yet to be.

Deborah. Happy Birthday! I have been following your blog for one day now and am so fortunate to have discovered your genius, talent and generosity, which is so lovingly expressed here and in all your works that I have spent hours now admiring in your family of websites. I hope to visit your store shortly. Until then, one question, can you please tell me who designed your lovely websites. I have a small business and would like to modify my website to function like yours does. Thank you so much again.

Dear Bee, my websites were designed and are maintained by Jonathon Hofley’s company Motor City Publishing. 1 248 594 5563. He also publishes Michigan Gardener Magazine with his brother Eric. I am glad you like my sites!

I hope you have a wonderful day!!! I so wish I could go to your neck of the woods and get out of this humid 100 degree weather down here in Louisiana and just follow you around for a day, I’ll bet I couldn’t even keep up with you. I have to say meeting you has been such a great thing for me. I ready your blog every day and try to replicate your work at my home. I didn’t know how much I liked to garden until I started seeing what you do, and how just a little patience and TLC can make some really beautiful things happen.

Thanks again for inspiring me and helping me find a passion…Happy Birthday!!

  13. Happy Birthday!

  14. Happy Birthday! I too will be leaving one decade behind this year. So far as I can tell, things just keep getting better the wiser you are……although the need to wear Spanx seems to increase as well! What a thoughtful gift of pruners for a small-handed person – that’s love!

  15. Happy Birthday! I hope your day, and year ahead, give you as much pleasure as reading your blog gives me. 60 sounds so (dare I say it?) old but I am not far behind you, and I still feel like I am a teen…..where did the time go? Best wishes for a wonderful day.

    • Deborah Silver says

Dear Michelle, time does go by. I have been lucky to have the time gone by marked by lots of well wishes from people who read my essays. How good is this! Deborah

  16. To our favorite “debutante”, Deborah,

Happy Birthday! Here’s hoping the entire day was as joyful as the way it started.

As one who has blazed the 60 trail before you, I can report that it’s not nearly as bad as it’s made out to be. If it’s any consolation, once you get over the dreaded notion of it all, it’s practically a non-event. In your case? With a brand new knee and your passion and energy for all things garden-related? A total piece of cake!

Speaking of which, thanks for sharing the photo with the birthday candles. You look lovely. And young. Glowing. Although I do think a tiara might have been a crowning touch for your debut!

Wishing you a very happy year! Thanks for all you do for all of us wannabe readers who look forward every day to your fabulous words of wisdom. You are a rare treasure.

Now, go uncorck that Chardonnay. And dance in the garden!

  17. Jennifer in Toronto says

Happy Birthday! It seems to me that you have accomplished a hell of a lot. I’m sure even greater accomplishments are ahead of you.

  18. Belated Happy Birthday wishes, Deborah!
